Sterling was founded by Freightliner LLC in 1998 as a new subsidiary with its own distribution network and distinctive product offerings. Freightliner LLC was renamed Daimler Trucks North America LLC in 2008. Sterling is headquartered in Redford, Michigan, in the Detroit metropolitan area. Daimler Trucks North America LLC is a Daimler company, the world's leading commercial vehicle manufacturer.

Sterling's mission is to be the dominant manufacturer of class 3-8 vocationally-oriented trucks in North America.
